Youth Internship Program> Becoming a YIP EmployerProgram GuidelinesThe Youth Internship Program (YIP), offered through CHRC in partnership with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (Career Focus) and the Department of Canadian Heritage (Career Focus - Building Careers in Heritage) provides opportunities for non-profit, public and for-profit arts and heritage organizations to hire emerging cultural workers for a 4 to 12 month full time internship. It also helps post-secondary graduates to obtain career-related work opportunities in culture to gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition to the workplace. Type of employer Any cultural incorporated organizations in the private, public, and non-profit sector (in the areas of heritage, writing & publishing, music & sound recording, visual arts & crafts, live performing arts, new media and audio visual), that are stable and financially healthy may apply. They must be willing to invest time and money in the development of their sector's workforce. *Municipal governments may not apply to the program. ** For-profit organizations aren't eligible under the Building Careers in Heritage program Funding Through Building Careers in Heritage (Department of Canadian Heritage), employers must contribute 50 % of the costs of the project in cash and in kind. Through Career Focus (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada), employers have to contribute 2/3 in cash toward the gross salary of the intern (i.e. the employer pays $2 for every $1 received). Under both programs, the whole amount (maximum $10 000) most go towards the gross salary of the intern and the employer's mandatory employment-related costs (such as Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan contributions, vacation pay and other mandatory deductions). Duration Under both programs, the internship may last from 4 to 12 months; the earliest start date is April 1st, and all projects must be completed by March 31st of the following year. Application We usually launch a call for applications in December with a February deadline. However, if more funding becomes available throughout the year, another call may be launched. Employers may wish to become members of CHRC to receive any updates on our internship programs or any CHRC related news. An employer may apply for both programs in the same time for more than one position. They are 19 placements for Building Careers in Heritage and 25-30 placements for Career Focus. Selection of a mentor A mentor is generally a senior staff or a member of the organization's Board of Directors who can offer ongoing guidance and supervision, and is willing to share information about his or her own career experience and networks to maximize the intern's work and learning experience. Selection of an intern Post your job on our website (www.cultureworks.ca), other cultural networks and university job boards. Also, make sure that your intern meets those criteria:
Selection process A peer review committee drawn from various disciplines within the cultural sector and across Canada assesses project proposals. The committee will consider the program objectives, guidelines and eligibility requirements as well as the strategic human resources needs of the cultural sector as a whole. The committee submits its recommendations to CHRC for final decision-making.
