CHRC has developed several course content documents for a variety of sub-sectors including visual arts and crafts, live performing arts, film and television, music and sound recording, writing and publishing, digital media, and heritage.

The creation of these course content documents was overseen by industry experts to ensure that they address the most up-to-date skills and knowledge needed by industry. They are for educators and trainers to adopt or adapt to their curricula or to use as stand-alone courses. Those interested in receiving any of the course content are asked to contact courses@culturalhrc.ca.

Artist as Entrepreneur
2010
Artist as Entrepreneur focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. The document, created for high school students, is divided into 4 strands: Enterprising People and Entrepreneurs, Ideas & Opportunities for New Ventures, Benefits of a Venture Plan, and Completing a Venture Plan. The course resource includes several activities for students to really engage with as well as real life success stories.

The Art of Managing Your Career – Course Modules

The Course Modules, developed for teachers at the college and university level and for use by professional associations, are designed for artists from all disciplines. It includes 16 modules and numerous handouts to give working artists the confidence and knowledge to successfully manage their career or business in the cultural sector.

The Art of Export Marketing
The purpose of this web site is to provide information to assist artists in understanding and managing issues related to Export Marketing of Cultural Products and Services. First created in 2002, the material has been updated in 2009 to better reflect the current global cultural environment.

Digital Media

Production Accounting for Film, Television and Digital Media

This course document examines the role, responsibilities and the methods and procedures used by production accountants who work in the film, television and digital media sectors, across various production genres. Course participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills as well as gain sound practical knowledge of production accountancy.

Setting Up a New Media Business in Canada

This comprehensive course material has been prepared in close consultation with successful New Media entrepreneurs and educators. It includes chapters on business marketing and management, business administration, and professional development opportunities; and describes in detail best practices drawn from New Media companies across the country.

Convergence Media

Its unique training template brings together the linear and non-linear story telling of film and television, and new media, and provides guidance in developing convergence projects with an emphasis on actual hands on project development through teamwork. The 18 sessions include instruction in writing business models, considering funding approaches, and setting timelines. It is designed for use by professional associations and educators/ trainers to facilitate and encourage training in convergence projects across the country to allow our cultural industries to take full advantage of multiplatform delivery.

Business Skills for Producers

This course content is a three day workshop designed for business owners and operators in film and television who are seeking business and management training. This workshop provides an understanding of the basic business skills needed to grow a company, and expand through strategies to capitalize on cross platform opportunities. It includes sessions on marketing, financing, distribution, negotiation and much more.

Film Set Etiquette
2009
Working on a film set requires more than just technical skills. It requires patience, adaptability, perseverance, creativity and teamwork. Understanding set etiquette can help you feel confident and provide you with the knowledge you need to work on a set. By understanding your surroundings you'll be able to concentrate on the task at hand; making a film. This document provides a general overview of set etiquette across Canada.

Set Safety Awareness

This course content highlights common safety hazards of working in the film industry as well as your rights and obligations as an employee, someone in a supervisory role, and as an employer. It gives those with a vested interest in film and television production, an introduction to Set Safety and Occupational Health and Safety for your province.
