A word from the Executive Director

Dear CHRC members,

Summer is upon us and we’re slowly coming out of COVID confinement! In the wake of the pandemic there have been some very poignant social developments. CHRC adds its voice to support the push for equality in opportunity and justice both within culture and outside of it. Canada must be a place for all to live, work and play with the same treatment regardless of what elements specifically define anyone. Discrimination or harassment of any kind must be eliminated. Two of our news items relate directly to these matters and how CHRC, through its projects, is working towards safe, inclusive and respectful work environments for all.

Looking forward to being in touch soon.

Kind regards,

Grégoire

Dealing with Harassment in Cultural Workplaces

CHRC thanks consultants Lise Labine and Jeanne LeSage for their great work in putting together a report funded by the Department of Justice.

Building on the 2019 LeSage & CHRC study Reporting and Investigating Mechanisms for Workplace Harassment in the Arts, Dealing with harassment in cultural workplaces explores current existing reporting and investigating mechanisms and studies other solutions to be implemented to assist cultural sector workers and employers. The focus of Dealing with Harassment in Cultural Workplaces is on the feasibility of the existing mechanisms being offered to larger user pools and/or the feasibility of implementing new alternative solutions. The articulated recommendations take into consideration how to resource new and existing solutions.

RWA workshops

You’ve asked and we’ll happily oblige: in order to respond to the request for online RWA workshops, CHRC will make a few adjustments and offer the facilitated conversations online in July and August. We remain cautiously optimistic that in-person workshops will resume in the fall. If you’ve already submitted a request for a workshop, we’ll be in touch with you soon. If you’re considering booking a workshop, please contact: ldaoust@culturalhrc.ca

Sub-sector consultations

CHRC wants to connect with its members in each cultural sub-sector (Live Performing Arts; Writing and Publishing; Visuals Arts and Crafts; Film, Television and Broadcasting; Digital Media; Music and Sound Recording; and Heritage) through online conversations. Please be on the lookout for an email invitation that will provide an opportunity for CHRC to both share on its upcoming endeavours and to hear from its members about their recent challenges and successes. This will be a first wave or what will become regular communications with members.

An important part of this conversation is a feasibility study of a national subsidized student internship program for arts and cultural establishments (organizations and businesses).
