CHRC opens 2012 with the release of much anticipated workshop resources for film and television production, music, and digital media.
After working with practicing professionals to develop course content on:
- Production Accounting for the Film and Television industry,
- Rights Management for the Music industry, and
- Project Management for Digital Media producers,
CHRC engaged industry experts as trainers and presenters to pilot the course content resources in workshop settings. They are designed to keep Canadian cultural workers armed with up-to-date skills needed to do business in the 21st century.
We have kept you in the loop through our e-newsletters, as these workshops were run in partnership with industry organizations, and many from the sector have participated in them over the past several months.
We are now ready to release the workshops resources: Production Accounting on January 23, Rights Management on January 30, and Project Management for DM producers on February 6.
They will be available through our website - free to Organization Plus members and at a modest cost for others.
We are hopeful that wide use will be made of these timely and pertinent resources by educators and trainers in universities, colleges and professional associations, unions and guilds.

TAMYC in Manitoba - a report from ACI Manitoba
The Art of Managing Your Career (AMYC) is a business and career skills training program designed for Manitoba artists. Created in part with the Cultural Human Resources Council, this pilot program was developed by ACI Manitoba since September 2009 to be multidisciplinary in nature and targeted to self-employed artists with an ongoing, established arts practice. Since its pilot in January 2010, 6 Winnipeg and 4 rural AMYC sessions have been completed with an expected 2 more to run in the immediate future. 125 artists have graduated from AMYC that specialize in disciplines such as visual arts and crafts, writing, music performance and composition, fashion design, new media and graphic design, film, theatre and performance art. In post-course evaluations, the students reported that they had made progress towards every single one of the course's stated objectives, particularly those having to do with attitudinal changes, self-awareness, knowledge of resources, preparedness, etc. The AMYC Program has met a very strong need in the community and it is clear that the potential impact of this course on the community of individual artists in Manitoba is extremely high. In all, AMYC has proven itself to be a consistent and tremendous success!

As we say in the letter: "CHRC is transitioning to a new business model without federal government support. We are excited about the possibilities and potential this holds for us. Plans are in the works to build on our strengths so that we can continue to lead on HR issues in the cultural sector going forward."
The CHRC Board is developing a plan to take us well beyond the sunset of the HRSDC Sector Council Program in March 2013. It is invigorating to consider the collaboration and partnerships we can build on, and the value of the products we have created for the cultural sector over the past years which we can continue to refine and adapt.
Your continuing support as we move into this "brave new world" of self-financing is essential to our plan. Thank you!
In 2012 - looking forward
A national HR Forum: As CHRC evolves over the coming months, our centre piece is and will be human resources. CHRC will continue to be a leader on HR issues in our sector. With that as our mandate, we are in the early days of planning a national HR Forum in June. Dates, times and location to be announced. We are building on the successes of previous cross-sector gatherings - e.g. around the national HR Study in 2010 and Culture 3.0 in 2011 - and specifically on the recommendations of Culture 3.0. How can we continue to benefit from the extensive consultation and analysis of that groundbreaking study? How can we tackle the recommendations that will help us to be central players in the digital economy? You will hear more about the topics, speakers and agenda in the coming weeks.
Speaking of our new financial regime, there will be a modest registration fee for conference participants. Some travel support will be available, but on an as-needed basis.
An AGM to approve a new governance structure: CHRC will have a "new-look and feel" as it moves through 2012. This will include a smaller Board and secretariat. By-Laws will have to be adjusted accordingly. This will happen at our 2012 AGM. Given the extensive deliberations that must go on prior to this important step, the AGM will likely happen in the early fall to give us enough time to prepare the process.
Cross-country meetings: As in years past, CHRC will be holding meetings across the country to touch base with our members and the broader sector on HR issues of importance to them.
We will work with our PATAC partners to set these up.
This year we will do our "cross-country tour" in the fall, bringing news of CHRC's changes and laying the groundwork for our continuing collaboration and partnership with the sector on projects and initiatives to strengthen human resources.
